During my high school career I was a party of the fencing team. My school was one of the few within the region that actually had a fencing team, so playing matches often meant taking very long bus rides places. My fencing sword of choice was the sabre. The sabre sword involved very fast paced action and quick thinking. I chose fencing as my athletic sport of choice in high school because there isn’t much running involved. Because I smoke, my cardiovascular system isn’t what it used to be, but that’s not to say fencing is not a physically grueling sport.

Whenever I watch Olympics or any other similar event, somehow fencing has always caught my attention and I enjoy watching that sport. I have been fascinated by the way the competitors move so quickly, their agility and lean form. Above all, I have always wondered about the fencing shoes that they wear. I used to keep thinking what if the shoes are not sturdy enough, what if the person slips and falls, etc. But I am told there are branded companies which make these shoes and the shoes are supposed to be light, strong and enable easy movements on the part of the wearer while helping him to hold well to the ground too.

The Olympics began in Ancient Greece. Although the show of skill in those days was sure to be impressive it does not match how many different categories and types of games we have today (I’m sure the ancient Greeks did not have any fencing gear on hand!) In the ancient beginnings of the Olympics they competed in the categories of wrestling, horseback riding, boxing, and running. In addition to those feats there are categories that span swimming, skiing, and there have even been suggestions to include bowling! The spirit of the Olympics remains the same, but has come a long way. Especially the human sacrifices to Zeus!

I recently have begun an exercise regime which makes me sore every other day. I had a deep tissue massage three days ago and my muscles are sore from the therapist hands kneading me. I used the travel stick which didn’t alleviate the pain but at least I got to see how to use it properly. The thing that seemed to help most was a hot shower with a direct stream of water to the sore areas. The exercising is feeling better and soon I hope to see major results from all of the hard work I am doing, meanwhile once a month a good massage will do my body good.

As you probably already know the winter Olympic Games are underway in Vancouver, Canada. What you don’t know is the struggle that many of the athletes have to endure just to get there. Many of them have regular day jobs and must take time off of work to play in the Olympic Games. How much do you think the airlines make on baggage traveling to the Olympic Games? Think about it. Each hockey player has to check his personal bag and hockey bag before they go. I would not want to be a summer Olympian trying to check my bags. I could see it now. “Sir are you carrying any weapons. Well, yes, I have my fencing equipment. You are going to have to come with me; you can’t bring a sword on an airplane. “Just a few things for you to ponder while watching these Olympic Games.
